What is it called when Asian food is cooked directly at your table?
What is it called when Asian food is cooked directly at your table on a grill in front of you, similar to the table/restraunt where Chris Farley posed as a fish slinging chef, in the movie Beverly Hills Ninja?

When it’s someone who is cooking for you (typically a chef) it’s called Teppanyaki (teppan=iron; yaki=cooking)

Here is the benihana website.
http://www.benihana.com
They say "At the heart of the Benihana experience is the teppanyaki table, around which guests gather and enjoy a meal expertly prepared and cooked to perfection on a steel grill, right before their eyes"

When you cook the food yourself (raw meats, veggies, shrimp, etc) it’s called Yakiniku (yaki=cooking; niku=meat)

An example of a restaurant like this is Gyukaku

Also, hibachi is what Japanese use instead of a grill…. It’s tiny and usually homes have them, you use charcoal to cook the food… It’s not the style of cooking.

Hope this helps :)

The restaurants are informally called hibachi style. The real Japanese name for that style of cooking is teppanyaki.

The hibachi (Japanese: ??, literally "fire bowl") is a traditional Japanese heating device. It consists of a round, cylindrical or a box-shaped open-topped container, made from or lined with a heatproof material and designed to hold burning charcoal.

In North America, the term "hibachi" is used to refer to a small cooking stove heated by charcoal (actually called shichirin in Japanese), or to an iron hot plate (teppan) used in Teppanyaki restaurants.

It’s called Teppanyaki. And it’s Japanese in origin, though there are variations.
